On Friday 22 nd May at 10am Las Vegas/1800 London, translator Sophie Stevens and Out of

the Wings Director Catherine Boyle will be in conversation with some of the creatives involved in

bringing the piece to the stage for its first full English-language production, and exploring some

of the transnational collaborations that have enabled the creation of this piece, as well as the

ways in which it might resonate with audiences in 2026.

Please contact Sophie Stevens (sophie.stevens@sas.ac.uk) to register if you would like

to join the zoom conversation.

Set in a Madrid radio station in the 1930s, in the build up to the Spanish Civil War, three women

with different political views but a shared love of art and theatre work together to produce a

weekly radio programme. The regular news bulletins reveal the growing political pressure; as

acts of violence and censorship affect cultural production within and beyond the radio station,

the women are forced to make difficult decisions about their lives, their work and how they

support each other.

Gigi Guizado, actor, translator and Out of the Wings member based in Las Vegas, has

participated in several readings, including at Out of the Wings 2023, and will play Paquita in the

Las Vegas production. She reflects on this experience:

The Anemone and the Boar by Mónica Maffía, translated by Sophie Stevens, is a gem of a play:

a period piece that sneaks up on you with its timeliness; politics wrapped in poetry; a radio

drama unfolding to reveal reality. I couldn’t ask for a more well-written contemporary play to

perform. I feel honored and privileged to have been involved in Sophie Stevens’ translation of

this play throughout its journey from the page to the stage.

In 2022, I got my first chance to play the frustrated actor turned radio announcer ‘Paquita’ in an

online reading hosted by the University of East Anglia (where Sophie was a Leverhulme

Research Fellow). I was thrilled by the drama of the story based on historical events, by gaining

access to the play via Sophie’s brilliant translation, and by the opportunity to work with actors

Lucy Phelps as ‘Encarnación’ and Cinthia Lilen as ‘Carmen’.

Revisiting the play for the staged reading of ‘The Anemone and the Boar’ at the Out of the

Wings Festival 2023, this time as ‘Carmen’, the secretive foley artist intern, was even

more satisfying because the creative team (Director Camila Ymay Gonzalez, Jimena Larraguivel

as Encarnación, Chloe Wigmore as Paquita, and I) rehearsed together in person with Sophie as

a final step in the translation process. The performance was especially rewarding because

playwright Mónica Maffía was in attendance with some of the cast she had assembled for the play’s impending premiere in Spain, and after the curtain call we got to meet and exchange

experiences.

La anémona y el jabalí by Mónica Maffía has since premiered in Madrid, Buenos Aires, and

Montevideo. Inti Press has published Sophie’s translation. Now, thanks to collaboration between

The Asylum Theatre and Out of the Wings, The Anemone and the Boar by Mónica Maffía,

translated by Sophie Stevens is premiering in Las Vegas!
