Out of the Wings Festival 2023, July 11-15

Out of the Wings returns for its seventh annual festival of theatre in translation from the worlds of Spanish-, Portuguese- and Catalan-language playwriting, and beyond. Commencing with the Out of the Wings Forum at King’s College London, the week continues at Omnibus Theatre with play readings from five different countries, all in English translation and in the UK for the first time.

Play Readings at Omnibus Theatre, July 11-15

Omnibus Theatre, the home of our play readings for another year

Our 2023 play readings bring work from Nicaragua and Panama to our line-up for the first time, as well as plays from Catalonia, Argentina and Brazil. From a 20th-Century classic to new writing of the 21st, the plays of #OOTW2023 share stories across borders and explore universal themes of family life, the impact of conflict, the fight for human rights, the role of the artist, and the search for purpose in a confusing and fractured world. More here.

July 11: The Myth of Gravity by Xavier Stanziola (Panama), translated by Alexander Aguayo

July 12: The Taxidermist by René Piazentin (Brazil), translated by Sughey Ramírez

July 13: The Peasants Walk the Pathways by Pablo Antonio Cuadra (Nicaragua), translated by William Gregory

July 14: The Future by Helena Tornero (Spain/Catalonia), translated by Helena Buffery

July 15: The Anemone and the Boar by Mónica Maffía (Argentina), translated by Sophie Stevens

OOTW Forum at King’s College London, July 11

The OOTW Forum 2018 at King’s College London

During the first day of the Festival we present the Out of the Wings Forum, Worldmaking on Stage: Community-building in and through Theatre Translation, which will be held at King’s College London in partnership with Language Acts and Worldmaking and Translation Studies@Goldsmiths, University of London.

The Forum will bring together theatre translation practitioners and researchers to discuss and share ideas on how we establish, build and nurture communities through theatre translation. A series of roundtable discussions with interventions from theatre translation specialists working across a range of contexts and languages will be the starting point for our exchanges on creating and shaping theatre translation communities in the future.

The Forum is open to anyone interested in a dialogue about these topics and information on how to register will be available soon.
