Call for Presenters

As part of the 2026 Out of the Wings Festival, Out of the Wings is once again coming together with Language Acts and Worldmaking, and working with the Institute of Languages, Culture and Societies and the University of Reading, to offer a one-day discussion forum aimed at theatre translation practitioners and researchers.

Taking place on Tuesday 14 July, and timed to coincide with the opening day of the Out of the Wings Festival (14 – 18 July 2026), the Forum will set the scene for a week of play readings from Latin America, Portugal, and Spain, presented in English translation every evening at Omnibus Theatre.

Following the success of its previous five editions addressing the idea of ‘Worldmaking on Stage’, in 2026 we invite participants to explore Theatre Translation Networks in Building Acts of Worldmaking

At the Forum, we will bring together practitioners and researchers — actors, directors, producers, literary managers, commissioning editors, dramaturges, writers, translators, research students, theatre translation trainers, theatre translation lecturers, and academics — to engage with ideas on how we create international networks around the collective work of theatre translation. What happens in the often conflictive spaces we create to transcend, for example, boundaries between language, cultural and geopolitical contexts?

We invite short proposals for ten-minute (maximum) provocations which engage with the theme as a way to reflect on practice and/or research and pose questions or share ideas that can contribute to a productive discussion. This length of time is to ensure conversation and to allow us to hear as many voices as possible. Please take this into account as you prepare your provocations. We invite you to engage with, among others, the following questions and topic areas or to propose other questions in your submission:

  • How network-building nourishes translation practice.

  • How the digital landscape influences the practice of network-building.

  • The role of theatre anthologies in creating ideas about national theatres.

  • How does the intermediary reading and production of the translated play operate in these spaces?

  • How do we develop productive mechanisms to connect the different global initiatives for sharing through theatre translation?

  • What role does theatre translation play in enabling theatre texts and practice to circulate?

  • What else can we be doing?

The deadline for proposals is Thursday 30 April at 17:00, London local time (BST).

Please fill in this form to submit a proposal.

If you have any queries or questions then please contact the organisers: Professor Catherine Boyle, King’s College London (catherine.boyle@kcl.ac.uk); Dr. Sophie Stevens, Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies (sophie.stevens@sas.ac.uk); Dr. Camila González Ortiz (c.y.gonzalezortiz@reading.ac.uk); Dr Kate Eaton (kteaton364@gmail.com).

We look forward to seeing you at the forum and festival 2026.

Out of the Wings is a multidisciplinary collective focussing on the research, translation and dissemination of the theatre of the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking worlds. We are active throughout the year with monthly meetings, our annual festival, and ad-hoc events. While our own focus is Ibero-America, the OOTW Forum welcomes contributions relating to translation to and from any languages, from anywhere in the world.
